What Is Clean Beauty?

Beauty standards have evolved. Health scandals, growing mistrust toward traditional cosmetic brands, and skin weakened by modern lifestyles have led consumers to pay closer attention to product formulations. In response to this shift, a new movement has emerged in the beauty industry: Clean Beauty. But what does it really mean? Let’s take a closer look.

What Is Clean Beauty?

Clean Beauty does not have a single, official definition. In essence, it represents a new way of consuming beauty—focused on clean, green, and responsible products. Consumers are seeking cosmetics that are safer, healthier for both skin and planet, and ethically produced, without compromising on performance or effectiveness.

Why Clean Beauty?

In recent years, the public has become increasingly aware of the harmful effects of certain ingredients found in food, household products (laundry detergents, disinfectants, dishwashing liquids), as well as skincare and cosmetic products.

Consumers first began scrutinizing food and cleaning product labels—and now they carefully examine beauty product ingredient lists. As early as 2001, German journalist Rita Stiens exposed problematic cosmetic ingredients in her book The Truth About Cosmetics.

According to a 2020 Kantar study on hygiene and beauty market trends, 44.5% of French consumers say they are paying closer attention to what they buy. They want to know exactly what they are applying to their skin, hair, and body, with 2.3 million households scanning the composition of hygiene and beauty products.

To avoid undesirable ingredients, many consumers initially turned to organic products. In response, conventional cosmetic brands have had to adapt, reformulating products and removing harmful substances.

Why Do Consumers Need Reassurance?

Before this shift in awareness, traditional cosmetic brands often remained vague about their formulations, focusing instead on packaging and marketing claims, asking consumers to trust them on product efficacy.

This lack of transparency led to growing distrust. Combined with the exposure of multiple health-related scandals, it triggered a strong demand for cleaner, more ethical cosmetics. Consumer behavior has fundamentally changed.

Which Ingredients Are Problematic in Cosmetics?

Today’s consumers are far more sensitive to product quality. They favor ingredients of natural origin and reject questionable chemical substances that may cause irritation or health risks. Some of the most controversial ingredients include:

Triclosan
An antibacterial agent and preservative used in cosmetics. It is an endocrine disruptor that can affect estrogen hormones and thyroid function.

Titanium Dioxide
Widely used in makeup and sunscreens, titanium dioxide—often in nanoparticle form—has raised safety concerns. It has been banned as a food additive since 2020 due to potential toxicity risks.

Phenoxyethanol
A common antibacterial and antimicrobial preservative found in many creams, lotions, and deodorants. According to a 2012 report, the French National Agency for the Safety of Medicines (ANSM) recommends avoiding its use in products for children under three and considers it potentially toxic to blood and liver.

Parabens
Preservatives mainly used in industrial cosmetics. While not all parabens are harmful, many are considered endocrine disruptors.

Mineral Oils
Derived from petroleum, mineral oils are highly polluting and provide no real benefit to the skin.

Sulfates
Found in skincare and haircare products, sulfates are surfactants that create foam and cleanse by dissolving oils in water. However, they can be irritating and overly stripping for the skin.

This list is not exhaustive. Other aggressive or potentially harmful ingredients to avoid include oxybenzone, siloxanes, BHA, benzophenone, and more.

Clean Beauty: A Demand for Transparency

Consumers want brands to be transparent about product formulations. Clean Beauty responds by offering products free from substances that are harmful to health and the environment.

Beyond clean formulas, consumers also seek information about manufacturing processes and production locations. Authenticity is central to the Clean Beauty philosophy, which often favors short supply chains and products made in Europe.

Clean Beauty: A More Responsible Lifestyle

Consumers are more informed and conscious than ever. Concerned about their health and environmental protection, they choose brands that align with their values and ethics. Clean Beauty goes hand in hand with a healthy, eco-conscious lifestyle.

Clean Beauty: Beauty That Innovates

Health and innovation lie at the heart of Clean Beauty. Thanks to scientific progress, certain brands are developing advanced active ingredients that revolutionize beauty while respecting both the skin and nature.

What Are the Core Principles of Clean Beauty?

To identify a Clean Beauty product, consider the following criteria:

  • A safe formula free from controversial ingredients
  • Environmentally and socially responsible production
  • An innovative brand that is transparent about its commitments
  • Local manufacturing
  • Eco-friendly packaging (whenever possible)

Clean Beauty is a growing movement—one that is clearly moving in the right direction.
